Nurtured at Home is one of the largest home-based early childhood education networks in New Zealand. Educators care for small groups of children (typically up to 4) in the educator's own home, supported by visiting qualified teachers. The model suits families who want one-on-one care, mixed-age groupings, and a domestic environment rather than a centre-based setting.
How home-based ECE works
Unlike centre-based daycare, Nurtured at Home places your child with a licensed home-based educator (sometimes called an 'in-home carer') who has been screened, qualified, and is supervised by Nurtured at Home's visiting teachers. The educator looks after small mixed-age groups in their own home. Visiting teachers come to the educator's home regularly to support learning, planning, and assessment — typically weekly.
20 Hours ECE and FamilyBoost
Nurtured at Home participates in 20 Hours ECE for 3-5 year olds at most locations (confirm at enquiry). Like all licensed ECE, fees are eligible for the Childcare Subsidy (MSD, means-tested) and the FamilyBoost rebate (IRD, 25% of weekly fees capped at $75/week). Compared to centre-based ECE
Home-based care is typically slightly cheaper than education-and-care centres for under-2s, with smaller group sizes, more flexible hours, and a calmer environment. Centre-based may suit families who want their child to socialise with a larger peer group or experience a more structured environment. Both models are MoE-licensed and follow Te Whāriki, the NZ early childhood curriculum.
